Today I got to take one my fellow classmates class AND two of my university students joined us in the restorative flow. I think my classmate did a phenomenal job teaching her class and the students seem to enjoy it too. During my debrief with the students, our grad has really embraced doing yoga and… Continue reading Yoga @ Ace JUly 14th
We are back in the community y'all! We joined the Kingsley Association and Ed Gainey in the Senior's Health Fair assisting YROL in chair yoga and community engagement. It was fun and informative because I had never seen a chair yoga class before this one. After the chair yoga session we visited the Center for… Continue reading July 13 Senior Health Fair
We did our check-ins. I learned that one of our members is having a yogi baby! YAY! and this is another weekend that we will be in the community. YAY again.
TOday we did another recap of A&P. I am behind in my videos so I learned more than I could participate in the conversation. TOday was extra special because we had three young women from my university come visit yoga training today. These young women are in a program I have developed to help… Continue reading A&P Again June 9th
Today we had an amazing presenter on Disability RIghts. I mean DOPE! I really had to sit with this information and check myself on my lack of unawareness and ignorance. As someone able bodied, I made a decision to not educate myself on other social justice topics even when they were presented to me. During… Continue reading Disability Rights June 7th
Friday nights seem to be a little slower pace and allows us time for our check-ins. We had some discussion on human rights and preparation for Dustin for Saturday.
We visited the Juvenile Detention center again. This experience is one of my favorites in the YROL training. I like to observe Felicia in her element teaching the youth and I love the interactions and engagement I get to have through this experience. I would love to teach yoga for YROL in Juvenile Detention Centers… Continue reading Recap April Day #3
On this day we had an awesome line-up to assist YROL with community yoga classes. THe daywas intended to started with a morning class at the community housing complex where Antwon ROse II lived, afternoon yoga for the Jewish Youth of PGH. Whew chile, this was one hell of an emotional ride! The morning started… Continue reading Yoga in the Community April 6
We were assigned social justice focus areas to research and present. I am focusing on the LGBTQA+ which is an area I would love to learn more about. I know general knowledge, but there is certainly more growth for me to learn the history, the struggle, and continuous work within the LGBTQA community. Just this… Continue reading Social Justice March 10
This R&I really hit home for me and made me emotional during my share. Talking about the wealth gap, access to property, and gentrification is painful. I have lived in East Liberty for 9 years as a child watching my mother struggle with addiction and my sister (the oldest) not having access to healthy outlets… Continue reading Race and Illusion Housing March 9th
Friday night there were only three of us in attendance and we sat in discussion. We didn't dive into much. but it was a great time to connect with each other.
We sat in communion and discussion as a small group just talking through life and how our lif is current;y reflecting the 8-Limbs of Yoga. It is a good reflection because it is a reminder that I need to constantly think and act within the 8 limbs path.
We continued watching the documentary and also learning about anatomy and physiology. I am very intrigued by this documentary series and love the unique lessons that Felicia brings to our class.
We spend hours learning about the science of the body. I spent years trying to avoid any science course beyond astrology and earth science haha, but it is refreshing to have yogis who are fluent in the information help us along our path of learning.
We were left to think about what type of practitioner we want to be and how studying an East Indian philosophy would be framed in our classes. We did some studying of the Gita and our interpretations of that text. Discussing trauma and healing. I decided to write a bio that helped me look at… Continue reading Our Yogi Style Dec 13
Today I wasn't feeling it. I was low energy and my spirit wasn't settled. I am blocked in my acceptance of things. Ironically, the children's book reading of The Magic School bus really resonated with me in the theory of "go with the flow." There was a member of our yogi circle that I just… Continue reading Book Reading Dec 12
April 5th When I learned of Antwon's death I grieved his life, what was selfishly taken from us to experience, the boy that was and the man that would never be. Try to imagine how scared #AntwonRose was as he made a quick decision to run... save his life or stay and risk his… Continue reading RIP Antwon Rose apr 5
Nov 3 I was not prepared today. I've always dreaded science and have a mental road block on learning anything in science. Then I ask myself "What the hell are you doing learning yoga!" Lol but seriously, Kathryn and Unoma has brought a refreshing overview of the videos in a way I've never engaged with… Continue reading Anatomy Oh My! nov 3
Nov 2 We were visited by our cohort of the UIR training and discussed our gatekeeping actions. Since the UIR training I reflected and focused my gatekeeping role as an educator in higher ed. Once I returned to campus I presented the YUIR conference to our board of student government leaders. They were excited about… Continue reading PISAB Reunion nov 2
Nov 1 What kind of teacher do I want to become? In my current interactions I think I'm a coddler and don't give my students enough hands off to find the path for themselves. It's a delicate balance that I'm seeking. I would like to be a teacher that may provoke learning and knowledge of… Continue reading Teachings nov 1
Sept 7 The first day of the yoga training and we are asked to think about the day after our death. 😳. I wish I could say something like, "I've never thought of life like this." But I have. I think about death more often than I like to admit and more often after the… Continue reading Empitaph sept 7
Sept 9 There is so much to learn and share...where to start. It seems like even in this training, where you would hope everyone is open minded, white people still can not see how they harm POC in their own lives and actions. It's frustrating to hear some women, who have biracial children and grandchildren,… Continue reading September UIR
Sept 8 Wow! I have never attended a training that explored racism in a mixed group and with such details and quality. The ideas, truths, and knowledge I received and share was in a level of analysis I've only done with myself or within groups of other POC. I'm not sure within those groups I've… Continue reading September UIR
Feb 9 Today we learned the deep history of the US and how whiteness evolved through world history. I have never learned history in this way and really valued the lessons shared. I could sit, listen, and learn this information all day. To truly understand the threads in which the US was built helps deepen… Continue reading Legacy feb 9
Feb 8 Friday we shared how we are applying the 8 limbs of yoga to our daily lives. Most recently I have been practicing niyamas through self-care practices such as daily's meditation, reading, & cleaning my space. I have also included the Asana in a morning routine when my body allows. I have also focused… Continue reading Applying 8 Limbs feb 8
Watching the race the power of illusion two. Leaves me with multiple feelings to digest. First, I'm disgusted. None of the information is new to me, but each time I watch or revisit the deep horrors of history makes me feel disgusted with all white people. Their culture is so violent, barbaric, just pure evil.… Continue reading Documentary II Jan 20
Today has really challenged me to become more aware of my implicit biases and how they manifest in my day to day interactions. The funny thing is that if anyone were to ask me or anyone close to me were asked what areas I had to work as biased towards another group of people, it… Continue reading Implicit Bias Jan 19
